here it is my new simmons, i got rid of my last one about 2 weeks ago

and the last 2 weeks without a simmons have been some of the hardest of my life

i do love these little boards..

this one is kermit the frog fluro green.

this is from my "simmons dynamica" template. it has

an S Deck. hull entry that rolls in to a single concave slot

through the fins, with the rails tucked/chined up from the fin outwards

like a hydro hull. very similar to the original 40's bob simmons bottom

but much more blended and subtle.

the fins are pushed up and sit at 2" from the tail.

i find this gives me a larger sweet spot the board works from. this photo does exagerate

the distance and the toe in... its only toed 1/16"

the "brown dog" gives his all knowing nod of approval in the background

he knows a good foil when he see's one.

hows the S Deck on that monster?, and the foil?, i really bladed this one out.

those of you that know me, surely know by now

that i love to blend retro with performance

heres another example instead of the old simmons disc fins, i've been experimenting

with my own template, its a hybrid of the disc and the keel fin. its single foiled for bite

and im getting amazing feedback from it. all the fun of the keel with the

surface area and drive you get from the disc fin.

Last week i was lucky enough to land one of these finely tuned, hand crafted fishes shaped by Jesse Watson of Black Apache Surfboards and boy do they go good... from hollow little tubes to fast down the line walls, this board takes off like a bullet and lets you throw it around like it's one of your thrusters...

It's going to be very hard to get off this board!....

my new board

its finally here, MY new board, i've been waiting for this one for a while

i've been so busy its been hard to get my own quiver organised.

i got rid of all of my quiver from last year and MY new boards are finally trickling in.

this one is my hullabaloo its a hull/stubbie hybrid.

this one blends a rolled front with a slightly

double concaved rolled vee in the tail.

its one im experimenting with at the moment...

5.5 oz volan top and bottom with a deck patch and tail patch

i love the greenish tint that you get with volan, its so simple

but sooooo old school, and the fins become the highlight

hand layed glass on sides are slightly larger but have the same base as my smaller

side fin, so as i refine the fin placement i can sand down the sides as well

which lets me do some real experimenting. the center fin is a 7 1/2"

hand made flex fin by my man wiz.

hows the flex in that bad boy... good flex too, you really want a full flex

from the midpoint up, not just in the tip, this one came out great

this board is just screaming to be rideen

damo's new mini simmons

i dropped off a new simmons for my man damo the other day

this one was a 5'6" done in a blue pigment

with white stripes on the nose for that "nautical" theme that

is quite popular with the cool kids at the moment

damo works at the cooly board store (the old base surfshop at cooly)

he usually has the board with him so go in and check it out if your in the area and say hi

damo is the man... thats what he'll tell ya anyway..

this one has the traitional simmons slot/single concave through the rear

with a hulled entry.. i got to ride this board the other day and it flies,

i liked it so much i went straight back in the bay

to shape myself one on the same day that i finished this one.

i've been making mini simmons as long as anyone in australia,

and i'm glad to see they are finally starting to get the attention they deserve

i have been singing their praises to anyone who will listen for a long time now

if i could have only one board the simmons would be the board.

if your thinking about getting one do it.. you'll never look back.

the scrambled egg

here's one for all you single lovers out there,

this is "the scrambled egg", it combines an egg style template

with a modern foil. hull front that rolls into a hydro hull style rear.

i got the opportunity to have a go at this little board,

and i loved it! i want it back! it works best with a larger flex fin

purple tint, with purple sparay panels over the top

this one measured in at 5'11" x 20" x 2 7/16

low rails hard edged tail, get your old skool freak on.

Hello Surfrider Foundation Friends,

We had a successful night at our 'How to Fix a Ding Tutorial' with Jesse Watson from Black Apache Surfboards. Thanks to all those who came and gained a plethora knowledge from Jesse.

Next month 10/8, Surfrider Foundation is laying low with only a committee meeting, that is open to all members, and then in September we are jumping back with an environmental lecture and a dune care in North Kirra. We have also just confirmed that we will be the opening event for Kirra Surf Stock in November. Good times to come.

Surfrider Foundation Gold Coast Tweed presents How To Fix A Ding Tutorial

Surfrider Foundation Gold Coast Tweed is starting to host tutorials on sustainable surfing. On Tuesday 13 July, Surfrider Foundation Gold Coast Tweed and Black Apache Surfboards are partnering to present the inaugural DIY tutorial - "How to Fix a Ding Tutorial" at the Kirra Surfriders Club.

Surfrider Foundation Gold Coast Tweed desires to present regular gatherings to teach the surfing community how to live and surf sustainably with the resources we have on a daily basis.

"Why would you pay $70 to fix a dinged rail to a local shaper if you had the knowledge to do it yourself? The surfing community has always been a self-sufficient people group, trying to live as simply as they can. Surfrider Foundation wants to keep that mantra at the forefront of our surfing and lifestyle. We are also excited to partner with the up-and-coming Black Apache Surfboards," said Adam Feichtmann, President of Surfrider Foundation Gold Coast Tweed.

When surfing was introduced into Australia, surfers were forced to learn and do everything themselves. With the advancement of modern technology and popularity of surfing, the Do It Yourself mindset nearly died. Surfrider Foundation Gold Coast Tweed as a surfing environmental organization, wants to bring that attitude back to surfing; one, for the joy it entails, and two, to draw awareness to the damage people can cause to the oceans, beaches, and waves by not being wise about their resources.

2 new boards for ben, the one on the top

is a simmons, which will have hot pink bands on it

the bottom one is the apache quad keel.

its a blue tint with white pigment tail dip

bens loved the look of the richard simmons i did earlier

(see below) and wanted the same, but his will have

pink bands instead of green, cause "pink is the new black"

ben was frothing to get at these boards

and i delivered them without getting any finished photos, but ben

has promised me some pics soon........

or as soon as he can get off them, all reports are they

FLY and he's stoked... but i still haven't gotten any photos yet...

a nice fabric inlay on this one. thats vintage norwegian apple leaf fabric

on the nose, with a beige pigment and dark chocolate pinstripes.

got an email from a guy named matt the other day, he's in SA he was looking to get a richard simmons made for himself, anyways after talking it seems he has made a simmons in hollow cedar which ironically was constructed from a file that i made available for anyone to use on the tree to sea website! how great is that. i made the file available because i believe in the simmons, i love the simmons and i think everyone should have one... i am constantly getting enquiries about them and they are fast becoming my most popular board. anyways heres what he had to say.

..."Cheers for the info, you’re right the simmons just flies compared to any of my other boards...just a question..did you post a template on Tree to Sea? If it was you, I made the board and it does everything that it says on the box. Here’s an image, its hollow 5’7 Cedar and other scrap from the shed, epoxy finished, pushed the fins right to the back like the traditional Bob, works a treat ..next one will be in agave.. I’m keen to look at getting a Richard, but might have to wait until you get back from indo.."

(thats right the pidgeon is off to indo)

its great to see someone having a go for themselves, i still remember my first crude attempts at making boards (not that matts is crude at all) they werent the best and the learning curve was STEEEEP but they were the most rewarding boards i ever rode. good on you matt, we'll hook you up with a richard simmons when i get back from indo.... did i mention im going to indo?

the crooked vulture

this is another of my regular models

"the crooked vulture" this board is a small wave ripper made for tight little turns

and off the top snaps. it generates amazing speed, and will catch almost anything that breaks,

hence the "vulture" name... it can live on the scraps that others leave behind

again all fins are hand made and hand foiled, i've got a thing for matching fin colour to board colour at the moment, its time consuming but they look great, this one is sea foam blue resin pigment layed straight onto the foam with clear glass over the top 4+4oz top and 4oz bottom.

fixed fins add a little more response to an already responsive board

so you can squeeze every last drop out of a smaller wave

the vulture has a real fast look to it, this one is a custom and has been scaled up for someone in the 85-95 kilo range, but still manages to come in at 5'11 x 20" x 2 1/2" it has a litlle more nose and tail volume to accommodate the extra weight but is still a really fast loose board with low sharp responsive rails

here you can see the bump flyer that narrows the rail line at the tail allowing you to bury the tail easier, it also adds a pivot point for the back foot. the diamond tail also shortens the rail line which again = shorter turns

"the crooked vulture" is a great addition to your quiver ideal for small beachies or smaller days at the point

the bonzer 5 jive

here it is the black apache version of the cambell bros bonzer

this model is "the bonzer 5 jive"

its a classic five fin bonzer but used in a modern shortboard style template

i kept the diamond tail and added a little width to the outline

the concave is narrowed up slightly with a more hydro hull style bottom as opposed to the trditional vee bottom of the original bonzer

its a design i've had good results and feedback with

all fins are hand made and hand foiled in house

darker blue deck for contrast

this one measures in at 6'0" x 20" x 2 1/2"

has very low thin rails and feels great under the arm

great little speed machine

bonzers are a great addition to your quiver

the fish fry 2010

here are a few shots from sundays fish fry

we had a good crowd though the weather didnt co-operate at all

at one point the wind threatened to blow the whole show away

part of the black apache line up for the day

me checking out some boards with my good friend dick harvey

he had some nice boards on the day

the apaches were recieved really well lots of photographs were taken and lots of enquiries were made

lots of interest and a few orders too,

even had a couple of guys wanting to purchase boards on the day

though thats not allowed as the fry' is a non profit day

some great boards here from my friend sam yoon, of flying soul surfboards,

with glassing by peter mo' glasser to the rich and famous

nice resin work. and some quirky little D fins on his twins.

the "richard simmons"

here it is my newest incarnation of the mini simmons,

this one is the "richard simmons" more flamboyant than the original mini simmons

sharper edges and geared towards performance just like the 1980's exercise guru that it steals its name from this one will make you "wake up and breathe!"

this is the other end of the simmons spectrum - single concave with the fins further forward than the original.

if you thought the simmons was fast this will blow you away, ive never ridden a faster surfboard period.

rasta signature keels with the vector foil, these are the best keels ive found anywhere, the vector foil adds speed and drive

smoke tint with tailpatch mixes the vintage with the modern,

protec wetrub finish to keep the weight down,

single 6oz deck and 4oz bottom again to minimise the weight

and some lime green bands to get som attention

heres an older one done in a simple magenta tint with a full gloss and polish

the "apache twin"

this is my newest board for the week, this model is the "apache twin" its my rocket fish template,

it has the speed and glide of a twin fish but is more performance oriented.

this model draws great lines and is the mac daddy at point breaks.

if long fast arcs are your thing and your a bit of a smooth operator then this is the board to get you operatin' correctly

this one is in double orange tint with black and white pinlines, has rasta's signature future fins

they are a vector foiled fin. again to push the performance aspect,

she measures in at 5'11" x 20" x 2 1/2"

the "pilchard" quad

this is a board i've gotten ready for the fish fry, its the "pilchard"

its one of my stable models that i do regularly.

its a hybrid shortboard/fish, setup here as a quad FCS, 4/4oz deck and 4oz bottom with a protec finish

its a foam resin galaxy on the deck and bottom with an orange tint bottom and smoke tint insert on the deck. this was a revisited concept for the glassing that turned out awesome. everyone that has seen this board loves it and i have a sneaking suspicion it might not last til the fry'. i may have to shape another one.

its light its fast and you can go anywhere on a wave on this style of board.

this has been really popular with those who want a fish but dont want to lose out on performance and want to go vertical.

the "pilchard" is my regular board and i find the kind of board i can ride most of the time.
if i could ride only one style of board this would be it.

it has a shortboard style rail, with a hard edge tail,

so its an easy change over from riding your shortboard

you can get straight onto a board like this and rip it up like your shorty.

the flyers in the rear really help this board to turn shorter and sharper

and gives a nice pivot point right on the rear foot.

this board can be ridden 4"- 6" shorter than your regular board and a little wider,

this one measures up @ 6'0" x 20" x 2 1/2"

a new duo of mals to enjoy the last of summer with

the one on the left you've seen below but the big rig on the right is my new 9'6 the "rough stone rolling" its another model ive been putting some time into lately, refining the design a bit. particularly because we've had such a lackluster season for swell so far. its been a good time to push my mal concepts a bit.

its available in sizes from 8'0 to 10" has a flat rocker with a little tail flip and is a pure noserider/cruiser. three stage rocker with a nose concave as opposed to the pronounced nose "spoon"

oh and you can have it any old you like it

this one comes in the classic "wheres wally" color scheme

tail patch w/full gloss and polish.

you might see this baby down at the alley shortly, hopefully with ten little piggy's over the nose.

a new slider for a lovely lady

this is a new board that i shaped for kylie, for sliding into little peelers at the alley and just making the most of summer

thats a fabric inlay on the deck with a baby blue pigment bottom.

this one measures in @ 8'2" x 20" x 2 3/4"

big enough to cruise but small enough to still get her arm around it and for it to be fun and stable to ride

full gloss and polish on this one for a mirror shine

and a red fin to match it all up, kylie was stoked with this one.

i've been so busy making everyone elses boards lately, but i finally found the time to make one for myself, this model is "the pious bird of good omen" its something ive been working on for a while now.

its a hydro hull style bottom, with vee in the tail and rail chines up the board that fade at the halfway point. a variation of the bonzer theme designed for serious speed and the vee helps rail to rail surfing.

this is a working mans board, designed to be ridden hard. its a single 6oz top and bottom, simple foam spray, protec finish, all designed to maximise strength and minimise weight. this is my first 2+1 setup and im keen to get it wet.

the board measures as: 6'2" x 20" x 2 7/16"

made for when the points line up a bit, ..... if they ever do again??

the "crazy horse"

just finished a new board, this one is "the crazy horse" a small board anywhere from 5'5" - 6'0" range rounder template twin fin, excellent alternative to a traditional fish or mini simmons this planshape turns really well. the curve is continous all the way around and these boards turn on a dime. this one's 5'6"x 20 x 2 1/2

these boards are great small wave rippers, these boards FLY!

this one is a smoke translucent tint bottom matched to a grey pigment wrap around deck

single layer 6oz deck and bottom to keep the weight down, protec wet rub finish, again to minimise weight

can you ever go too fast on a surfboard??

well ive finally moved house!! and what a mission it was.. to celebrate i felt a new board was in order.

i made an alai, full standup model 7'x18 3/4"x3/4

to go with my other 4'2" bellyboard

here im burning in my logos with a wood burner.. this almost takes longer than the actual shaping

here you can see that beautiful curve in the planshape

the pidgeon was here.. gotta leave a mark...if only for posterity

everyone always wants to know about the alaia, are they hard to ride.. well the answer is yes.

i did get up second time on this one.. but even after 15 years of surfing i feel like a begginner when i get on this board, i tell you what though when you get that trim line going and your flying down the line the fun level is through the roof... great small day fun. stay tuned for some action shots soon.

bob mctavish talkin about his quad fin theories, he reasons that the rear fins should be placed a proportionate distance to the size of the surfers foot.... thus enabling the heel and toes to engage each fin more, giving a more connected ride, also the rear fins are only single foiled same as your standard front pair.... he definitely got my attention.... all the test pilots that i spoke tool had stupid ear to ear grins and said they were converted.... after spending some time in discussion with him i will be trying this theory out for sure on my next quad....

listening to bob was definitely the nights highlight, a charismatic but humble guy who has seen it all come and go, when i asked him about his best session ever he said "this morning!... i got 45 min in before the wind kicked up", and later when asked about his favourite era of surfing he said "right now, pointing to the quad" the man is definitiley current...as fresh as ever... and is in line with my own philosophy of performance, outside the mainstream arena.... good on ya bob.

no waves this week, and the boredom has driven me to shape a new alaia bellyboard for myself

its 4'2" and it should absolutely fly

its all about the concave and the chine with these badboys

its deep and it runs nearly the full length of the board

time to burn on the logo.. i love doin this. its very time consuming, but surfboards are usually so neat, where as these logos are burned on freehand.. it really captures the whole piont of timber surfboards, stripping it back to the bare essentials, no frills, no colours, no fibreglass, no resin, no chemicals, no deckgrips, no wax, no legrope, no fins, no rocker, just wood and oil and waves..

Wooden Surfboard Course

i recently had the opportunity to attend a Hollow Wooden Surfboard Building class with Paul Jensen from the U.S.A. it was a great week and a great introduction into the art of building timber boards something i had never found the time to do previously... stay tuned you may see a black apache or two recreated in the timber guise soon. watch this space.

the veneer is epoxied and laminated on one side, this shows how vibrant the finished coulours will be

next the frame is mocked up ready to have the skins attached top and bottom

here the deck skin is glued into place

theres a lot of talk about the simmons lately, they seem to be popping up everywhere and thats great they are one of my favourite boards. heres our take though, we moved the fins up, added performance keels, and put a tucked under hard edge in the tail. this board was sooo good i kept it for myself.

the fastest board i have ever ridden.
